orange vigilance gradually lifted in France

The orange snow and ice vigilance ends this Thursday, December 15, 2022 according to Météo France forecasts. Some snowfalls and slippery phenomena may persist but with a much lower intensity in the face of the thaw that sets in.

[Mis à jour le 15 décembre 2022 à 11h53] The snowy and freezing disturbance is coming to an end. Meteo France plans to lift the last eight orange snow-ice vigilances at midday, this Thursday, December 15. While 19 departments were still to be on alert according to last night’s forecast, this morning meteorologists revised this number downwards with orange vigilance limited to the Grand Est region, the one which experienced the heaviest snowfall and the most important slippery phenomena between Tuesday evening and Thursday morning.

If the weather alert is no longer in order, the temperatures remain cold and often negative on the northern half of the country but the thaw is felt. Meteo France predicts “new precipitation on the tip of Brittany with a little rain and snow mixed, even snow in the interior” but nothing to worry about. It is also possible that snowfall will reach “northern Auvergne, Burgundy, Franche Comté, even northern Rhône-Alpes in the evening” this Thursday but the quantities will remain low “a priori”, warns the forecast balance sheet. The white coat is however very present on the ground this Thursday in Alsace with readings of between 3 and 8 centimeters of powder.

What weather forecast for the next few hours?

All orange snow-ice warnings must be lifted at noon according to Meteo France. The disturbance that arrived from the west on Tuesday evening has finished crossing the country and is gradually leaving northeastern France this Thursday, December 15. 58 departments remain on yellow alert for snow and freezing rain or for thunderstorms and rain-flooding in the south-east. Tomorrow the meteorological institute plans another yellow snow-ice storm vigilance on the eastern half of France. The thaw is however announced for the next few days with less cold temperatures throughout the country.

What conduct adopted in case of snow and ice?

If the disturbance ends, the ice is still present on the roads in the northeast. Caution and safety measures are therefore in order. As always in this type of situation, motorists are called upon to exercise calm and vigilance, to respect the traffic restrictions and any diversions put in place. Drivers must also adapt and reduce speed while increasing safety distances.

If the ideal remains to limit its movements, in case of need to go from one point to another, motorists are invited to take with them something to drink and eat, as well as warm clothes. A charged phone is also recommended if you have to hit the road.
