Supermarket war in Nieuwegein ends after settlement
With a settlement, the municipality of Nieuwegein, Aldi and a group of other supermarkets put an end to a legal battle last month, which was labeled a ‘soap’ in court. On several occasions, the parties not only faced each other, but also stood next to each other in court. Ultimately, Aldi and the municipality together pay 500,000 euros to the other supermarkets and are therefore suitable.
It was all about the temporary location of Aldi in the new residential area Blokhoeve West. The municipality leased its land to Aldi, but other supermarkets objected. A first judge ruled in favor of the supermarkets. If the Aldi were to stay open longer, the municipality would have to pay penalties to Aldi’s competitors. That amount went well into the papers, and so the municipality then took Aldi to court.
