Oppenheimer star Robert Downey Jr confirms bizarre ban even the

Being able to make a film with Christopher Nolan is like winning the lottery. At least that’s what the enthusiasm with which many stars report on their set experiences suggests. However, there are strict rules on Nolan’s sets. One of the most bizarre is now confirmed by Oppenheimer actor Robert Downey Jr.: He couldn’t sit down while filming.

Robert Downey Jr. couldn’t find any chairs on Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer set

As part of Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Downey revealed to his Marvel co-star Mark Ruffalo:

You wanted to sit in your set chair after the scene. But you couldn’t because there were no set chairs. […] It was very spartan, as if 100 people were working on clockwork every day.

According to Downey, Nolan intentionally designed minimally equipped and populated sets to take the actors out of their comfort zone. It’s not the first time that stars have shared the unusual experience of filming a Christopher Nolan film. Robert Pattinson and Anne Hathaway have also spoken about its strict rules, Hathaway also complained about the lack of chairs.

As inhumane as the director’s rules may seem to some, they still seem to achieve the desired effect. Nolan’s films are considered by many to be absolute masterpieces, and the director himself is considered one of the most influential filmmakers of our time.
