Parents are being advised to talk to their children about safety during the March break.
“Kids are excited to be out of school for the week and we want to remind caregivers to always speak to their children about the importance of their safety,” Const. Ed Sanchuk, of the Norfolk OPP, said in a statement. “Taking a few minutes to talk to your children about safety can be the difference between life and death.
“It’s worth the time.”
Sanchuk said area rivers, ditches and streams will fill up with water during warmer temperatures.
“Children are often interested in exploring these areas but with water levels rising, we often see rushing water and slippery banks that are a hazard,” Sanchuk said. “That’s why it’s important to keep children away from them.”
Children are often left home alone while parents work during March break so it’s also important to ensure all doors to the home are locked and remind children not to answer the door to strangers.
“Speak to your children about internet safety and ensure they do not give out personal information and never to agree to meet anyone they meet online,” Sanchuk said.
The OPP is also reminding motorists to pay close attention as more students will be out walking, cycling, skateboarding, or playing on the streets.
Slow down and watch for children, Sanchuk said.
Meanwhile, those going on a trip need to ensure their home is secure and have a trusted family member or friend pick up flyers and mail while away.
The OPP also recommends inviting trusted friends and neighbors to park vehicles in your driveway while you’re away, arrange for snow removal and put lights on a timer.
“Try to duplicate the way your house would normally look,” Sanchuk said.
