The early morning bust came Thursday after the OPP’s border enforcement security task force learned of suspicious activity linked to two people on a personal watercraft near Old River Road in the Port Lambton area, Lambton OPP said in a release Saturday.

Officers from the task force, Lambton OPP’s Corunna detachment in Corunna and Walpole Island police, joined by OPP’s dog and emergency response team members, seized 36 illegal firearms, police said.

But the suspects fled on foot and investigators are asking the public’s help identifying them and finding the missing watercraft, police said.

“Illegal firearms pose a serious risk to public safety and are often used by organized crime groups, including street gangs, to commit violent crimes including theft, intimidation, extortion and homicide,” Det. Insp. Lee Fulford of the OPP’s organized crime enforcement bureau said in the release.

“Any tip from the public, no matter how small, may be the missing piece that officers need to solve this investigation and to prevent future firearms smuggling incidents.”
