A 64-year-old London resident was a passenger on a 7.5-metre sailboat on Thursday afternoon, OPP said. The boat anchored so the passenger could go swimming, said OPP spokesperson Const. Brett Phair.
Emergency crews responded at about 3:45 pm Thursday after the operator of the sail boat reported the missing swimmer in the lake near Port Stanley, a beach side town in Elgin County with a population of about 3,000.
“This morning I am out with the marine units in Port Stanley assisting the underwater search and rescue unit in efforts to locate the missing party,” he said on the social media channel X, formerly known as Twitter.

Police are not releasing the missing swimmer’s name but the family has been notified, Phair said.
“Our search efforts continue,” he said. “Our condolences go out to the family and we are making every effort to try to locate the missing party.”
On Friday OPP boats are searching three to six kilometers from shore, Phair said Friday morning.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that when you are out boating it is important to always wear a life jacket – they save lives because you never know how quickly conditions can arise and its crucial that you have all your safety equipment available.”
