Opened automatic fire against the police – now the trial ends

It was on April 18 earlier this spring that the 56-year-old man, who is now indicted, was observed in an area northeast of Alingsås with an automatic weapon. An event that then escalated when the first police patrol arrived at the scene.

The man opened fire with his AK4 automatic carbine from inside a wooded area and fired a total of 42 shots at the police patrols on site. Now he risks 16 years in prison after he is charged with, among other things, three attempted murders of police officers.

– That it is directed at police officers during an ongoing operation shows an indifference to democracy in Sweden, prosecutor Andreas Lennartsson has previously told SVT Nyheter Väst.

The trial, which lasted for four days in Alingsås district court, ended on Tuesday. According to the prosecutor, the man has had a hard time and remembers what happened on April 18.

– He has expressed that he had no memories of the incident, only small fragments, says prosecutor Andreas Lennartsson.

The man has admitted that he had the weapon and denies aggravated weapons offenses and attempted murder.

The 56-year-old man will be held in custody until a verdict is decided. A verdict in the case is expected on November 29.
