In Pokémon GO, the worldwide Hoenn tour with Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon is coming up. However, some trainers already have the new forms – and this is noticeable in PvP.
What are these Pokemon? Kyogre and Groudon are already strong monsters in general, but recently they can become even more powerful through protomorphosis. The concept works similarly to Mega Evolution, temporarily transforming the two monsters into “Proto Form”.
Brutally strong, these proto-forms are the best attackers of their respective types. They will be unlocked via proto-raids over the course of the Hoenn global tour this coming weekend, then trainers can claim the monsters.
However, you could already grab the two if you took part in the GO Tour in Las Vegas with a ticket. So some trainers already have the two monsters – and thus the opportunity to use them in the PvP league.
Because the “Mega Edition: Master League” has been running since February 23, 2023. And since the two are apparently approved.
Trainer meets Primal Groudon – Mighty monster dominating PvP right now
Coaches report: On the Pokémon GO subreddit TheSilphRoad, a post is getting a lot of attention right now that shows a trainer having to battle Primal Groudon with his Mewtwo. User “travielee” asks directly: “Uh. How can that be allowed? Absolutely destroyed”:
Normally, special forms like “Mega” Pokémon are not allowed in Battle League. However, the gimmick of the “Mega Edition” is that you can use “Mega Evolutions” there – and obviously also Primal Groudon, although you might not have expected the “Proto” form.
The explanation for this is provided by user “martycochrane” from the “Pokeminers” (via reddit): “Protos are exactly the same as megas in the game, only with different texts and assets that are shown to the users. For those who are curious, they are both referred to as ‘TempEvos’ in-game, and the Mega Cup just allows ‘TempEvos’”.
That’s why players can use Primal Groudon right now, or face him. And the monster seems to be a top choice right now when building your team for the Mega Master League.
How powerful is Primal Groudon right now? In terms of HP alone, Primal Groudon and Kyogre are in a class of their own. According to the Gamepress database, both can reach 6672 WP under perfect conditions – no other monster in the game can currently match that. It is followed by Mega Brutalanda with a maximum of 5688 and Mega Latios with 5661 WP (via gamepress.gg).
Not only that, but the new Abyss Blade Special Attack is a direct upgrade for Groudon that just makes it very difficult to beat right now.
On YouTube, for example, user “HomeSliceHenry” shows how Proto-Groudon achieves impressive victories and can sometimes blow away strong monsters with just one charge attack (via YouTube).
In any case, Primal Groudon went straight to the top of the Master League ranking in the Mega Edition. The PvPoke page creates rankings of the best monsters in PvP based on simulations. There the Primal Groudon is clearly number 1 – followed by Primal Kyogre. This is followed by the Mega Evolutions Gyarados, Sumpex, and Latios.
By the way, Proto-Groudon can only be defeated with water-type Pokémon, since it has a double weakness. Thus, Primal Kyogre and Mega Sumpex in particular are good choices against Primal Groudon.
But not everyone can access the protos yet. However, that will change at the weekend: Here you can find the overview of the worldwide Hoenn tour.
