Ontario West Municipal Conference coming to Chatham-Kent

Hundreds of delegates representing municipalities across the region will converge on Chatham for the Western Ontario Municipal Conference Oct. 25.

Returning after a six-year hiatus, the conference is a chance for municipal officials to work together on solutions to today’s challenges, as well as to create new opportunities for communities.

It will be held at the John D. Bradley convention center.

Paul Wells, the Canadian journalist, author and political commentator, will be keynote speaker. Wells, who was Maclean’s magazine’s lead political columnist for 19 years, has written for the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and National Post, and now produces a widely read political newslette.

This year’s event features 30 speakers discussing top municipal issues. Session topics will focus on key priorities of the Western Ontario Wardens’ Caucus, including housing, mental health and addictions, workforce, infrastructure and economic development.

There will also be a fireside chat with area MPPs Rob Flack, Ontario’s associate housing minister. and Matthew Rae, the parliamentary assistant for municipal affairs and housing.

“We are delighted to be hosting the return of the Ontario West Municipal Conference and look forward to welcoming our colleagues from across Western Ontario to learn and collaborate together,” Norfolk County Mayor Amy Martin, chair of the 2024 Ontario West Conference committee, said in a release.

The wardens’ caucus is a not-for-profit group drawn from 15 upper and single-tier Southwestern Ontario municipalities with more than 1.5 million residents.

Registration is now open for the Oct. 25 conference, with early bird rates available.
