A joint campaign by an Ontario farmers group and a Canadian organization representing churches and church-based agencies aims to help people facing food shortages.

The Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario (CFFO) – an organization that advocates for family farm entrepreneurs and policies that encourage Christian stewardship – says it will match donations by its members for a total of up to $5,000 as part of the Giving Tuesday campaign. The Ontario-based organization has teamed up with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, made up of 15 churches and church-based agencies nationwide, on the joint campaign aimed at helping people facing hunger worldwide.
About 65 people gathered on Wednesday in one of the innumerable tents at Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show, a massive three-day agricultural expo that takes place in Woodstock each year and draws upwards of 40,000 people annually, for the announcement.
“The Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario is proud to stand alongside the Canadian Foodgrains Bank in their mission to fight hunger globally,” said federation president Ed Scharringa in a statement.
As well as $5,000, the federation intends to match with its members, an additional $5,000 was contributed by wealth management company Caldwell Securities to help the campaign reach its $50,000 donation goal.

The Giving Tuesday campaign will support Foodgrains Bank and members’ partners around the world to provide emergency food to families affected by conflict or environmental disasters, according to a news release. The funds will also be used to implement long-term agricultural programs to help alleviate families afflicted by poverty.
“For one in every 11 people globally, hunger is their daily reality,” said Foodgrains Bank director Andy Harrington in a statement. “This devastating figure shows we are still facing an unprecedented hunger crisis which must be addressed.”
Harrington said the matching fund provides federation members the opportunity to double their donation in the fight against hunger in a time when “up to 757 million people globally experience chronic hunger.”
