A court in Russia rejects a request that the cause of death of Russian regime critic Alexei Navalny be investigated. The reason: the dead Navalny is formally the plaintiff – and only plaintiffs can bring suit.
It is Navalny’s mother Lyudmila Navalnaya who requested an investigation into the cause of death and an investigation into suspicions that Navalny did not receive adequate medical care. But the court was brief in its response, stating that only Alexei Navalny himself can request such an investigation.
The information comes from Navalny’s former lawyer Ivan Zhdanov.
“Aleksej reported the penal colony several times for failure to provide medical care. He was always rejected. Now that he has been killed, his family’s request is rejected with scornful words,” writes Zhdanov on Telegram.
Navalny died in February in a penal colony in Charp in the arctic part of Russia. The case was taken up by a court in Labytnangi on Thursday, about four kilometers from the prison.
