Hereditary lives up to its title. The film by Midsommar director Ari Aster builds its horror around trauma in the family. After the grandmother’s death, more and more repressed things from the past come to the surface. The peaceful everyday life in Annie’s family’s remote house falls apart. From then on, a devastating discomfort reigns over the supposed idyll in nature.

While Annie deals with her grief, the family wants to maintain a normal life as best they can. But that doesn’t work. Self-help groups, séances and a homemade miniature house are supposed to help. The miniature house in particular is a key to the film: if you look closely, you’ll see a lot more going on in the smaller version of the house than in the larger one.

Now streaming on Amazon Prime: The horror of Hereditary is in its visuals and music

The family drama tells of a generational trauma. The real horror comes from the beguiling music. Dark images and very sudden moments of shock introduce new tragic events. You can’t sit back and relax for a second here. Shock is waiting behind every door, in every corner of the room and behind the next street sign. Beware of the post!

Horror viewers already know a lot of things from Hereditary inside and out: haunted houses, loud screams and scary situations. But Hereditary doesn’t stop at showing these things again just like Evil Dead, for example. Ari Aster combines all the elements innovatively and creates a film that really gets to you. You’ve never had a horror experience like this before. Unless you know its sequel, Midsommar, which is just as nerve-wracking.

Hereditary is one of the most innovative horror films of the last decade. Don’t miss it.
