One year of tackling peak loads: 38 farmers in Utrecht are requesting to stop

What is the peak load approach?

The buyout scheme for so-called peak loaders was presented last year and is intended to reduce emissions near vulnerable nature reserves. The government also wants to support entrepreneurs in thinking about the future of their company.

Farmers with high nitrogen emissions in or within a radius of 25 kilometers of protected nature reserves are eligible for a scheme. A farmer is a peak loader if his company emits more than 2,500 particles of nitrogen within a radius of 25 kilometers. The nitrogen is bad for the vulnerable Natura 2000 areas. Farmers can request to stop. They then receive 120 percent of the company’s market value.

Companies can also apply for help if they want to become more sustainable or relocate their company.
