One Piece is one of the most successful anime franchises of all time. Not least because author Eiichiro Oda has put a lot of passion into his work over the past decades. Where does his great passion for pirates come from? From Wickie and the Strong Men, as it turns out.
One Piece creator inspired by Wickie: There are various similarities
As our colleagues at GamePro quote from a video from the anime channel Ferus, Oda has been a big Buccaneers fan since Wickie and the Strong Men. Anyone who only thinks of Wickie as a German series may find this strange. In fact, it is a German-Austrian-Japanese production that was commissioned by ZDF and ORF.

Vicky and the Vikings
The Wickie series is called Chiisana Baikingu Bikke in Japan and, among other things, has its own intro. The series was produced in Japan by the animation studio Zuiyo Enterprise.
Oda seems to have really loved some of the ideas in the Wickie series. Obvious parallels to One Piece include the pirate universe the optimistic disposition of the main character or the common theme of ingenuity and heart always prevailing over brute force.
