One person has died in Spain after contracting monkeypox.

According to Reuters it is the first known death in Europe.

Spain reported its first monkeypox-related death on Friday.

The authorities have not yet released any information about the person who died.

The death is the first known in Europe, and the second outside Africa, in the current outbreak. In Brazil, one person has died where it has been possible to link the death to the disease.

In Spain, 4,298 cases have been confirmed. More than a hundred people have been hospitalized.

The virus has taken off around the world, prompting the WHO to declare a global health crisis last week.

Facts

Monkey pox

  • Monkeypox (English monkeypox) is basically a zoonosis, that is, a disease that can be transmitted between animals and humans. The virus was first discovered in monkeys and was therefore named monkeypox, but the virus has mainly been found in various types of rodents in Central and West Africa.
  • During the spring and summer of 2022, a large number of cases of human-to-human transmission have been detected in several countries. These are countries where monkeypox does not normally occur, including Sweden. Transmission of the virus seems to have mainly taken place via sexual contacts between men.
  • Monkeypox is primarily transmitted through close physical contact with an infected person. Physical sexual contact, or other close skin contact with an infectious person, poses a particularly high risk.
  • Monkey pox often causes rashes, sores and blisters. The symptoms are often mild but can become serious in people in risk groups. In older studies conducted in Africa, some mortality has also been reported.
  • There are drugs that seem to have some effect against the infection and that can be used in severe disease.
