According to the latest data from the UK’s Office of National Statistics (ONS), Covid infections continue to increase across the country.
About 3.5 million people, that is, one in every 18 people carry the virus. That number was 2.7 million, or one in every 25 people, the previous week.
The increase in Covid cases is due to the rapidly spreading sub-variants of Omicron, called BA.4 and BA.5.
Even those who have had Covid before can become infected again.
The data is gathered by testing thousands of households in different parts of the country, with or without symptoms, to estimate how much virus is in the environment.
“Infections show no signs of abating and rates are approaching levels last recorded at the peak of the Omicron BA.
Stating that the numbers continue to increase across the country and in all age groups, Crofts said that they will continue to monitor the data closely.
Hospitalizations of people with Covid are also increasing in the UK, but this increase is showing signs of slowing down.
According to the UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA), the hospital admission rate for the week ending 10 July was 17.9 per 100,000 people.
This rate, which was 15.7 in the previous week, is the smallest increase seen in the last few weeks.
It is emphasized that Covid vaccines are effective in protecting against the virus.
Health authorities warn that supplemental vaccines should be made to maintain this protection.
