The drama Hidden Beauty is now available on Amazon Prime. In it, Will Smith plays the suicidal New York advertising executive Howard, who cannot get over the death of his young daughter. In his great sadness he writes letters to death, time and love. Shortly thereafter, he actually receives answers. In addition to the main actor, the film also stars Kate Winslet, Edward Norton, Helen Mirren and Keira Knightley.
However, the well-known cast couldn’t prevent Hidden Beauty too one of the biggest flops of Will Smith’s career became.
Hidden Beauty starring Will Smith failed artistically and commercially
Hidden Beauty continued an ugly box office trend in Will Smith’s later career that had been evident in some of his previous films. Works such as After Earth, Focus and Ershattering Truth also fell well short of expectations financially. As Digital Spy reported at the time, Hidden Beauty was finally the financial one in late 2017 worst start of Smith’s entire career. On its opening weekend, it only grossed $7.1 million in the US.

This negative box-office result, which, according to Box Office Mojo, has brought in just over $88 million worldwide with Hidden Beauty on a budget of $36 million to date, was also accompanied by numerous scathing reviews. The film has an extremely low rating of 14 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
For example, Justin Chang writes in the Los Angeles Times that Hidden Beauty “Not at the level of so-bad-he’s-good-again. Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that he just bad enough to wish it were worse.“
In fact, hidden beauty is one absolute oddity. As if twist master M. Night Shyamalan had inadvertently crafted a vicious black comedy about dealing with vulnerable people that twists common clichés of a touching, tear-jerking drama into the absurd.
On the formerly white slate of Will Smith, who was still at the peak of his career in the 1990s, is Hidden Beauty dirty stainwhich really has to be seen to be understood.
