Four films have already been pre-selected to represent France at the Oscars in March 2025. One of them will be chosen in the coming days.
After the failure of the 2024 edition, where Anatomy of a fall had not even been selected to represent France at the Oscars, the selection committee has no room for error. It has therefore been changed in depth, with new names like Audrey Diwan or Florian Zeller chosen to designate the film chosen to carry the tricolor colors within the Hollywood competition. With one objective, during the ceremony which takes place on March 2, 2025: to win the Oscar for Best International Film.
But first, we have to choose the candidate feature film. Four French films are currently in the running: The Count of Monte Cristo, Emilia Pérez, All we imagine as light And Mercy have been pre-selected, announced the CNC on Wednesday, September 11. We therefore find in this list one of the biggest French successes of the year 2024, since The Count of Monte Cristo has already recorded more than 8 million admissions at the French box office; Jacques Audiard’s musical comedy, which won two awards at the Cannes Film Festival; the Cannes Grand Prix won by Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia (which is also a French co-production); and Alain Guiraudie’s rural thriller, which also made a strong impression at the French festival.
One of them will be designated on September 18th and will officially enter the Oscar race. But even from this date, the road will be long before the precious sesame. Because if France will have chosen its candidate, the Oscars must now retain the said film during the various pre-selection stages, until the announcement of the nominated films, next January.
