One of the worst, most successful games is closing on Steam, but it still has fans

In the summer of 2017, the game Friday the 13th: The Game suddenly became a mega hit on Twitch. At its peak, the trashy-looking asymmetrical game had 125,000 spectators. Now the game is running out of steam and the servers are closing on Steam, but not because there are no players. But you have the Warhammer problem: the expensive license is expiring – many fans of the game are saying goodbye.

How was 2017? The game seemed cheap at the time and the gaming press brushed it off. It only got a 61% on Metacritic. Games with such a rating are usually flops that no one cares about.

But Friday The 13th: The Game hit the nerve of Twitch and was a total hit. At its peak in June 2017 it had 125,328 viewers. The developers explained: They don’t care about reviews, Twitch is more important.

Back then, it was still something new that games, despite bad reviews, were so popular on Twitch that it boosted sales on Steam. Later, games like PUBG and Fortnite made this a new phenomenon.

Friday the 13th: The Game was completely overwhelmed by the influx of players; the developers had not expected so much influx. The servers crashed.

But now on December 31, 2024, the lights went out for the horror game, and around 450 players said goodbye – many speak of a legend that will be buried there.

Dead by Daylight has long since established itself as a better alternative in the Friday the 13th: The Game niche:

The particularly trashy look made the game so appealing

That was the appeal of the game: Friday the 13th: The Game is a very similar game to Dead by Daylight, but with well-known characters from the “Friday the 13th” film series: More or less defenseless civilians flee from a relentless, powerful killer.

This was a lot of fun on Twitch in 2017 because the game was exciting to watch but pretty trashy. The appeal was a 70s horror film look and the screams of the streamers when the killer caught them.

But the game was never particularly high quality – Dead By Daylight quickly overtook it. Nevertheless, only a few players give fans such a good feeling as the nostalgia trip: In the end, it had 79% positive reviews on Steam.

There were always bugs, but they added to the entertainment:
