Modders have published an extensive document that reveals more details about the development of The Witcher 3. An important feature should therefore not have been part of the game.
What kind of document is this? Four modders named Moonknight, Ferroxius, Crygreg and Glassfish have been working on The Witcher 3 for years. They seem to be particularly interested in the development history of the game by CD Project RED. The modders have now published an extensive document that reveals new details about the game.
The document called “What lies unseen” comprises an impressive 584 pages and is only part 1 of a four-part series. It will examine how The Witcher 3 was created and what features and content were dropped or added along the way.
A look at the document on github.com reveals some exciting aspects of the development. At one point, trading card fans in particular should breathe a sigh of relief.
It’s not just the modders who are looking for more secrets in the game, other fans are also constantly finding new secrets.
A big time waster would have been missing
What is in the document? Anyone who has played The Witcher 3 knows Gwent. The trading card game can be played anywhere in almost any village or town.
The simple gameplay coupled with the typical collecting madness ensured that Gwent became a popular part of The Witcher 3. In 2018, a standalone game was even released that can be played for free.
But Gwent wasn’t originally included in The Witcher 3. Because the developers still wanted to include mini-games, there was arm wrestling and dice poker – similar to its predecessor.
Fortunately, this point has been rethought. This way you can take a break during the adventure, play cards in the taverns and kill a few hours. The main quest would actually be urgent, but hey, that one round of Gwent has to happen now.
Keyword main quest: The modders’ document reveals some other exciting facts that should interest fans.
What else is interesting? The main quest of The Witcher 3 takes around 50 hours, depending on how you play. But actually it should be about three times as long, i.e. 150 hours. The subtitle “The Wild Hunt” was also changed late; it was originally “A Time of the Sword and Axe”.
Additionally, players would have had to choose between Yennefer and Triss. As in the finished game, a romance could be started with the two sorceresses. However, the decision had a much larger impact. The sorceress who was not chosen by the player should not appear at all in the last third of the game. In general, the endings of the game should be more melancholic and ambiguous.
The most curious fact about the development concerns Cyberpunk 2077: The game was still in its early stages at the time. Nevertheless, CD Project RED had a quest planned for The Witcher 3 in which Geralt of Rivia would travel to the futuristic city of Night City.
What that would have looked like can only be speculated. What is certain is that The Witcher 3 has become a very good role-playing game even without all of this additional content. And it keeps the community on its toes even many years after its release: After 9 years, a player discovers a place in The Witcher 3 that only a few have seen
