The mix of horror film and thriller is about the serial killer Jack (Matt Dillon), who… bizarre murders as works of art considered. In various episodes spanning two decades, the director sheds light on several of the main character’s actions. Jack talks about this in voiceover dialogues with a mysterious interlocutor named Verge (Bruno Ganz).
While Jack wants to complete his life’s work, the police are hot on his heels. Little by little it becomes clear that the conversation with Verge is about the way to hell.

Trier crosses taboos with several scenes in The House That Jack Built. Images full of animal mutilation or even the killing of small children are definitely not for the faint-hearted.
