With The Batman, DC brought a box office hit to the cinemas just a few months ago. Let’s take a close look at the comic giant’s recent film projects, but let’s also discover some flops. The defeat that the Harley Quinn film suffered at the box office was particularly bitter.
Played by Margot Robbie, the anti-heroine was introduced in 2016’s Suicide Squad and proved to be a fan-favorite, so four years later she was her own solo film received. However, when Birds of Prey: The Emancipation of Harley Quinn hit the screens in February 2020, it was not granted a triumph at the top of the box office.
Despite the flop: Birds of Prey with Margot Robbie represents an important development at DC
With a budget of $100 million (excluding marketing), the spin-off has only grossed $200 million worldwide. In its homeland, the United States, Birds of Prey didn’t even break its production cost at $84 million. For the Warner Bros. studio, the film was a financial disappointment.

Birds of Prey is one of the few comic book adaptations with a female lead and a important step in the reorganization DC: After years of trying to emulate the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the film, along with Joker, marks a rethink towards more independent and idiosyncratic stories.
In direct comparison to Joker, Birds of Prey is still strongly linked to the previous DC adventures. Nevertheless, the film follows your own vision and proves impressively that it can just as well be embedded in an existing cosmos. James Gunn later copied this for The Suicide Squad.
Where the MCU films have felt more and more similar over time, DC does very well, one for each new spin-off to define a certain tone of voice. In the case of Birds of Prey, alongside director Cathy Yan, leading actress Margot Robbie is the most important key person. She brings incredible energy and transforms Harley Quinn into one of the most memorable DC characters to hit theaters right now.
