The Haitian capital remains under siege, because for ten days two gangs have been clashing in the northern suburbs, which prevents any safe movement towards the northern half of the country and the Dominican Republic. The leader of one of his armed gangs was extradited to the United States on Tuesday May 3, after he had already been in prison in Port-au-Prince for several years.

” Yonyon », whose real name is Germine Joly, is at the head of the 400 mawozo, this powerful gang which for years has controlled the large area between the capital and the border with the Dominican Republic. On April 22, the United States issued an international warrant against him, including charges of trafficking ” weapons of war ” and ” kidnapping for ransom of American citizens “.
This Tuesday, FBI agents came to transfer him to Washington. Because the criminal may have been serving a life sentence since 2015 in the Port-au-Prince penitentiary, he nevertheless continued to lead his gang from his cell. And it’s this gang that, last fall, kidnapped a group of missionaries and their family membersincluding 16 American citizens and one Canadian citizen.
It should be noted that these 400 mawozo currently sow terror north of Port-au-Prince by confronting another gang. Thursday, April 28, civil protection announced thatat least 20 people had been killed : a very partial assessment which is only getting heavier while the political authorities have not yet said a word about the situation.
