So far and no further: The Umbrella Academy, with currently 3 seasons, is one of the longer-running series of the streaming service. As Netflix just announced, the runtime of the popular superhero drama is growing to 4 more seasons. After that it’s over for Elliot Page and Co. too. A punch in the pit of the stomach for fans.

Umbrella Academy had established itself as one of the few genre series on the streaming service in recent years. The unusual superhero show had a large and loyal fan base. Actually a jackpot. Most broadcasters and streaming services would let such a series run longer than 4 seasons. Why not?
Netflix probably ended the series because it stopped gaining viewers in season 3. That is the most common justification for these business decisions – but it also means that Netflix has hardly any longer-running series. New content is simply more valuable for the streaming service to attract new subscribers. Existing customers only look down the drain.
