The wave takes place in an unnamed small German town, in whose high school the popular history teacher Rainer Wenger (Jürgen Vogel) teaches. In order to make their project week on the topic of autocracy a little more exciting, he sets up a social experiment.

He introduces a stricter teaching tone and uniform teaching clothing, marches together and indoctrinates his students with an anti-anarchist ideology. Critical voices are excluded. Actually, Wenger just wants to show how easily a movement like National Socialism could prevail today. But control of his idea soon slips out of his hands.
The wave brings together a whole squad of former and current German stars in front of the camera. In addition to Vogel and Elyas M’Barek as the student Sinan, the cast includes Frederick Lau (Victoria), Max Riemelt (Freier Fall) and Liv Lisa Fries (Babylon Berlin).
