Actor Johnny Depp has already appeared in a number of blockbusters. But one feature film of his career failed financially, but won the hearts of the critics and even won 2 Oscars. To this day, some viewers praise it as the director’s best work.
If you look back at Johnny Depp’s career, you will find successful titles such as the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series or Edward Scissorhands in his filmography.
But a work with Johnny Depp was praised by many critics and sometimes even called the best film by director Tim Burton, but turned out to be a financial flop at the time.
“A Loving, Comic Gem”
What movie is it about? We’re talking about “Ed Wood”. It is a 1994 tragic comedy directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp as “The Worst Director Ever”.
After Edward Scissorhands (1990), this is the actor’s second collaboration with the director.
Ed Wood received 2 Oscars: for best make-up and best supporting actor (Martin Landau). Johnny Depp also gave a very positive review of the film in a 2009 EW article:
Despite my involvement, this film is a loving, comic gem. With Martin Landau, Bill Murray and others I was able to work with a fantastic cast, but of course there’s an almost brotherly sensibility with Tim that made the whole experience a joy. Ultimately, I think that TB [Tim Burton] produced an American classic with the artistic license we had. A love letter to a filmmaker who didn’t get many.

Critics and viewers also gave very positive feedback about the film. For example, Ed Wood scores well on IMDb with 7.8 stars out of 10 (as of June 15, 2023).
Several reviews even called the film one of Tim Burton’s best ever. For example, user JawsofJosh writes via IMDb:
Burton’s great masterpiece, too bad so few noticed. One of the most overlooked films of all time, “Ed Wood” does to Tim Burton what “Malcolm X” did to Spike Lee and “JFK” to Oliver Stone: it ruins any expectations one could have of Tim Burton, because he has set a standard here that he will never equal again […].
Still, Ed Wood turned out to be a financial flop as far as box office numbers go: the film’s estimated budget was $18 million. However, worldwide box office earnings were just around $5.8 million (via the-numbers.com).
When is the next film starring Johnny Depp? From August 24, 2023 you can see the actor’s latest film “Jeanne du Barry” in cinemas. It is a historical film about Louis XV. of France, with Maïwenn. Johnny Depp plays the role of the king.
