Here Lincoln Six-Echo (Ewan McGregor) and Jordan Two-Delta (Scarlett Johansson) lead a monotonous life of the same routines. They hope that one day they will be allowed to go to “The Island”. To do this, however, they must win in the weekly lottery draw.

It quickly becomes clear that the place where they have lived their entire lives hides a dark secret. Lincoln and Jordan break out of the artificial prison and is henceforth on the run from Dr. Bernard Merrick (Sean Bean), the head of the mysterious facility that is sealed off from the rest of the world. It’s the perfect starting point for a series of breathless action scenes.

Johansson proved that she’s a great actress before The Island. At the time, however, she was new to action. Her entry could hardly have been more spectacular. With McGregor, who at that time had already done three Star Wars films, including furious lightsaber fights, she can keep up effortlessly.
It’s not just the physical challenges of an action role that Johansson masters with ease in The Island: she has one incredible presence in the film. When she dives and jumps through the streets, it feels real and convincing. This is a crucial advantage, especially for a director like Bay.

Bay loves to stage action as bombastic as possible, so the characters are often marginalized or completely lost in the face of the din. Johansson but stands out from the spectaclewhich is not least due to the brooding looks that also characterize her later action heroines.
Johansson never feels like she’s marching through explosions as an invincible superhero. There’s always something they deep down busy inside. Hardness and fragility go hand in hand in her acting. In The Island, her eventual action heroine isn’t perfectly formed, but it’s a strong debut.
