Luke and Leia’s kiss in Star Wars seems pretty awkward in retrospect when you know that the two are actually siblings. But George Lucas had a good reason for the decision to subsequently make the two brother and sister.
What is Luke and Leia’s relationship in Star Wars? The two are siblings, which they find out in the third film in the series, Return of the Jedi. Before that, however, there had been a lot of tension between the two; all signs actually pointed to a love triangle in which Luke and Han Solo were vying for the princess’s favor.
In Episode V there is even the infamous sibling kiss with which Leia wanted to make Han Solo jealous. Looking back, the scene seems extremely uncomfortable, but at the time, not even George Lucas himself knew that Luke and Leia were actually brother and sister.
“I had it right in front of me”
What was the reason? George Lucas made the two siblings when he found himself at a certain point in the plot: Luke needed the motivation to give his all in the fight against Darth Vader and be tempted by the dark side of the Force.
This is how Lucas explains in the Annotated Screenplays from 1997:
Finally, I had a problem with the fight between Luke and his father, which is why [Luke] finally turns to the dark side and tries to kill his father. [Regisseur Richard Marquard] was trying to block out the fight between Luke and Vader, and we got to this point below the throne room, and he said, “You know, the script says Vader says something that upsets Luke,” or something vague like that. […] And we didn’t have the actual moment that we needed where you feel like Luke is hiding. He won’t fight him. […] He would rather die, but then something makes him fight. […] And as we developed the script and developed the importance of Leia as a sister, I had it right in front of me, and it became obvious that if she turned to the dark side, it would provoke Luke.
During the fight under the throne room, Luke finally let his anger out and attacked Vader, whom he actually wanted to save. The scene made it plausible that Luke could fall to the dark side, but ultimately shows his heroism by resisting his dark desires.
However, Luke and Leia are not alone in the “Star Wars” universe with their incestuous kiss. You should also take a closer look at the family tree of Rey and Kylo Ren from the newer films – that’s exactly what Filmstarts did.
Overall, the original Star Wars trilogy is known for the fact that some ideas only emerged over time and existing plans were repeatedly thrown overboard: Star Wars: Master Yoda almost didn’t exist – another Jedi would have his role should take over
