How much violence can you see in a film? At least not an uncut second of High Tension, as decided by the German federal testing agency. First the film had to be cut, then even the cut version ended up on list B of the federal inspection agency for media harmful to young people. After 20 years, the notorious horror film is now available uncut in Germany.

Marie (Cécile de France) and Alex (Maïwenn) just want to spend a cozy weekend with Alex’s parents when a serial killer disrupting family gatherings. One by one, they fall victim to the psychopath as they desperately struggle to survive.
High Tension was part of a French film movement that Auteur sensibilities combined with the most explicit depiction of violence and by many also as “New French hardness” or “New French Extremity“. The best-known films of this movement include High Tension and Irreversible or Martyrs.
High Tension’s level of violence is indeed disturbing, but may have lost some of its shocking appeal in today’s media world. In March 2023, the FSK released the film in its unabridged version with a rating of 18+. It will be available in Germany from August 24, 2023.
