A tennis legend Roger Federer, 41, is ending his career. Suffering from a knee injury, the Swiss has not played for over a year.
Federer said he will still play next week in the European-American Laver Cup, but that will be his last tournament.
Federer had been scheduled to gradually return to the courts since the Laver Cup, but now it will be his last event.
– As you know, the last three years have been difficult for me due to injuries and surgeries. I’ve been working hard to get back into competitive shape. But I also know the limits of my body, and the message has been clear,” Federer said in a video posted on social media.
– I have played more than 1,500 matches in 24 years. The Laver Cup next week is my last tournament. I will of course continue to play tennis, but not in the Grand Slams or on the ATP tour.
Federer rose to the top of the world at the beginning of the millennium. He won his first Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon in 2003 and was ranked number one in the world for the first time in early 2004. The following years he dominated tennis by far, until Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic emerged as tough challengers.
