Five years have passed since the last Jumanji film was released in theaters. That’s a surprisingly long time considering how successful the adventure series’ recent sequels have been. But now nothing stands in the way of returning to the jungle. Sony Pictures has given the green light to the next installment.
The question of what Sony plans to do with the Jumanji series has been looming for some time now, after Bad Teacher director Jake Kasdan launched the franchise in 2017 successfully revived became. Two new Jumanji films have since been released and have grossed over $950 and $800 million respectively at the box office.
Now comes film number 3, as the Hollywood Reporter reports.
Big new adventure blockbuster with Dwayne Johnson officially confirmed: When does Jumanji 3 start in cinemas?
Not only has Sony confirmed work on Jumanji 3. The film also received a concrete theatrical release straight away. On December 11, 2026 the adventure series returns to the big screen. For now, this date only applies to the USA. However, it can be assumed that the film will be released in Germany soon.
The Jumanji series remains true to itself: the previous parts started in the first weeks of December of their respective years (2017 and 2019). A lot of things that have proven themselves will also be retained, especially the cast: Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart and Jack Black return in their familiar roles.
We can also look forward to the return of a familiar face behind the camera: After Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level, Kasdan will also direct Jumanji 3. It is unclear what the new film is about. Johnson teased the project to Virgin Radio two years ago saying:
Jake [Kasdan] has a very, very special cool idea for Jumanji 3, the finale [der Reihe] could be. In that sense, I would say it is something very special. The Jumanji franchise has never been as successful in its almost 30-year history as it has been since the reboot
Jumanji has existed as a brand since 1995. The first film with Robin Williams became a classic with its mix of adventure, fantasy, action and comedy that is still shown regularly on television today. The TV series Jumanji also appeared between 1996 and 1999 and produced 40 episodes in three seasons.
Zathura – An Adventure in Space, published in 2005, was the first attempt to expand the franchise to breathe new life – with Kristen Stewart and Josh Hutcherson, who would later lead two successful young adult series in the cinema with Twilight (Stewart) and The Hunger Games (Hutcherson).
However, Zathura turned out to be a financial flop, so it took another decade before Hollywood dared to take on the material again. Since the reboot seven years ago, the adventure series has been doing so well that not even genre greats like Indiana Jones and Lara Croft have been able to compete with Jumanji with their most recent films.
