The survival shooter Rust has now received a major update. There are a lot of changes to the gunplay behind it.

Rust is a survival game. Your goal is to gather resources, build your own shelter and of course survive. In 2021 and 2022, Rust also enjoyed great popularity on Twitch and therefore set new records for its number of players.

This week Rust received a major update, which mainly changes the gunplay. The reactions of the players are mostly positive.

The developers change the recoil of the weapons and add crosshairs

What are the biggest changes? The biggest and most important change is the new recoil, which has been built into almost every weapon. According to the developer, the recoil should be easier to learn. The new recoil is also intended to prevent scripts from just getting along with it – so it’s supposed to make cheating more difficult.

Recoil is replaced with aim drift. If you use an automatic weapon, it will become less accurate the longer you hold the trigger.

For the first time there is also a crosshair in the game. So you no longer have to cheat with your gaming monitor, you can use one directly in the game. If you are using rifles or a crossbow, this will be indicated automatically.

Depending on what you do, the cross gets bigger or smaller. If you run over the map, the crosshairs will get bigger and less precise. However, if the crosshair bothers you, you can simply switch it off in the game settings.

What else has been changed? If someone attacks you, you will see blood spatter in your own field of view. These show the player from which direction you have been attacked.

Two other changes should also be of interest:

  • There is now a new ammunition mixing table, where you can produce basic ammunition much faster than before.
  • Hapis Island is also coming back with the update. In the last update, the bugged map was removed and is now coming back revised.
  • You can now also use an extended magazine in PvP. This gives you 25% more ammo than before.
  • Many users praise the update for Rust, but there are also criticisms

How is the community reacting? In several threads on reddit, users are discussing the new update (via reddit.com). Some feel that this finally makes Rust more accessible and that the new recoil makes the game significantly better.

However, other users who have already invested hundreds of hours in the game feel alienated by the changes. After all, you’ve invested dozens of hours perfecting your weapons and handling, and now everything is different.

However, another user comments slightly sarcastically on this, writing:

Games need changes and updates to evolve, and so Rust changes recoil to shift the focus from gun play to feel and team play.

If you can spend every 2,000-3,000 hours learning the old AK spray, then you can easily spend <100 hours learning the new one.
