On the NCIS podcast, the Ziva actress revealed the truth about Gibbs’ potentially dangerous door-locking habit to Weatherly and guest star Sean Murray (via ScreenRant ):
The answer is, that he has already lost what was most important to himso he actually doesn’t care.
This refers to his first wife Shannon Gibbs (Darby Stanchfield) and his then eight-year-old daughter Kelly, who were killed by a drug dealer a long time ago in the series. Shannon was supposed to testify against him in court and was murdered for this reason. As a fan, you learn about the tragedy that has burdened and haunted him throughout his life through flashbacks to Gibbs’ past.

But while the past of NCIS seems pretty dark at times, the future looks bright. At least as far as the upcoming formats are concerned. For example, a Gibbs prequel called NCIS: Origins is being worked on by the US broadcaster CBS, and the crime dream couple mentioned above is getting a spin-off called NCIS: Tony & Ziva on Paramount+. In addition, the original series is about to enter its 22nd season – and NCIS: Sydney is also set to continue.
