One of the biggest flops of 2022 with Margot Robbie

A few months ago, Amsterdam was still called potential Oscar nominee traded. Last but not least, the director and screenwriter is a welcome guest at the Academy, as evidenced by American Hustle, Silver Linings and The Fighter. His latest prank was completely lost in the cinema – despite the star cast.

At the center of the story are three friends: nurse Valerie Voze (Margot Robbie), lawyer Burt Berendsen (Christian Bale) and doctor Harold Woodman (John David Washington). They met for the first time 15 years ago. Now they will be in one big conspiracy drawn.

Amsterdam on Disney+: A great cast stumbles through an idiosyncratic historical comedy

A murder in New York in the 1930s is the starting point of the story. From this moment we move through different time levels and meet some weird characters, played by acting greats like Anya Taylor-Joy, Michael Shannon and Robert De Niro. And that is just the beginning.

Of the remarkable cast of Amsterdam is made up of names such as Zoe Saldana, Matthias Schoenaerts, Timothy Olyphant, Rami Malek and Andrea Riseborough. It’s hard to believe all the stars have been spotted, but Mike Myers and Chris Rock make an appearance, not to mention a guest appearance from Taylor Swift.

None of the Hollywood greats mentioned were able to turn Amsterdam into a box office success. The film played on a budget of 80 million US dollars only $31 million worldwide on again. In the meantime, there was even talk of a loss of 80 to 100 million US dollars.

Amsterdam definitely deserves a second chance. The combination of David O. Russell’s energetic staging, Emmanuel Lubezki’s mesmerizing images and Daniel Pemberton’s driving music transform the film into something special. Amsterdam is a exuberant meandering through a feverish nightmare that is both humorous and tragic.
