The name Roland Emmerich stands like no other for sci-fi blockbusters and is almost synonymous with the catastrophe genre. But the maker of films like Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow now wants to give up the seismograph. His next film will also be his last. And its theme is already set.

After a huge sci-fi flop: why does Roland Emmerich stop?

He announced this in a BILD interview, from which the Süddeutsche quotes:

The next film is my last. […] I wonder if there will ever come a time where people can no longer live in the country where they were born – because of heat, because of water shortage, because of hunger.
I think the only way to wake people up is when they’re terribly afraid of something.

Apparently Emmerich’s new film, which is said to be a disaster film like many of his works, is supposed to serve this purpose. The director’s decision to quit may have something to do with the fact that since 2012 none of his directing work can be considered a cinema success. His last sci-fi film was a particularly brutal box office flop.

It is not known whether this will also end his career as a producer and screenwriter. According to the Hollywood Reporter, he is working on a TV series and would like to Make films about Spanish conquerors and Marilyn Monroe.
