Already 21 years after its theatrical release, Shaun of the Dead is an untouchable monolith of the zombie genre. In his pastiche, Edgar Wright placed sitcom characters in an apocalypse setting and thus gave the classic film current a fresh coat of paint. On Wednesday you can see Shaun of the Dead on TV. In this article you can find out why the sequel that many fans have been waiting for will never come.
What is Shaun of the Dead about?
Shaun (Simon Pegg) is in his late twenties and at a crossroads in his life. Is he finally growing up and taking his relationship with girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield) seriously? Or is he stuck in the eternally youthful routine with pal Ed (Nick Frost)? In the midst of these life questions, a zombie apocalypse bursts, in which Shaun makes questionable decisions, but develops unexpected verve.
Pointless: What Simon Pegg says about the Shaun of the Dead sequel
Shaun of the Dead ends satisfactorily for all characters. Simon Pegg’s character experiences a full hero’s journey. There really is no need for a sequel. But the movie is so popular that Pegg is constantly bugged with requests for a sequel. In the run-up to Mission: Impossible 7 he last said:
Whenever I do an Instagram Live, people always say, ‘I need Shaun of the Dead 2 in my life.’ And I’m like, ‘No, you don’t fucking need Shaun of the Dead 2! The last thing you need is Shaun of the Dead 2! It’s over. Keep going!’
Simon Pegg points out the probably real motivation behind the sequel wishes: sentimentality. And that’s never a good reason for another film.
If you’re dying to experience the humor and dynamics of Shaun of the Dead for more than an hour and a half, you can still check out the other two installments in the Cornetto trilogy: Hot Fuzz and The World’s End.
