George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead isn’t just one of the best zombie films according to our rankings. With worldwide box office receipts of over $30 million against a budget of just $114,000, it is also one of the most successful indie films ever. The cult film also significantly defined the modern image of the man-eating undead.

In a cemetery in Pennsylvania, Barbara (Judith O’Dea) has to watch as the dead suddenly come back to life and transform into man-eating undead. With five other survivors, she flees to an abandoned farmhouse, where the group barricades itself from the army of advancing zombies.
Night of the Living Dead consisted of five parts, all directed by George A. Romero: Zombie – Dawn of the Dead (1978), Zombie 2 – The Final Chapter (1985), Land of the Dead (2005 ), Diary of the Dead (2007) and Survival of the Dead (2009). A seventh part without the creator, who died in 2017, is also scheduled to appear.
The Night of the Living Dead is that good
In the Moviepilot community, the horror classic achieved a high rating of 7.3 out of 10 points and was also at the top of the top 10 in the last major ranking overview of the best zombie films. The zombie cult film became a cult favorite in the FILMSTARTS review with 5 out of 5 stars and therefore the “masterpiece” award considered.
