Three Kings on Amazon Prime: George Clooney wanted to protect extras from the director
Three Kings is set at the end of the Second Gulf War in 1991. A troop of US soldiers led by Archie Gates (Clooney) is on its way in Iraq in search of a pot of gold and is once again confronted with the cruelty of war. When it opened in cinemas in 1999, the film met with enthusiastic critical acclaim, with Roger Ebert calling it “a strange masterpiece” and “one of the best films of the year“.
However, Clooney and Russell were reportedly at war on the film set. As Far Out Magazine quotes from articles in Entertainment Weekly and Vanity Fair, the star wanted to protect the extras from russell who allegedly repeatedly humiliated her while filming. According to a recent Hollywood Reporter interview with producer Charles Roven, the argument played out a little differently.
According to Roven, Russell had to yell at his extras because of the volume on set. Clooney misread the situation and yelled: “If you need to pick on someone, do it with me!“, whereupon the director accused him of not having learned his dialogues. A physical altercation apparently ensued.
“Would I ever work with David again? No never“, Clooney Entertainment Weekly later explained. “But do I think he’s incredibly talented and should be nominated for Oscars? Absolutely.“Sometimes a masterpiece is paid for with a set war.
