  • Slumber Party Massacre: A feminist slasher

Slumber Party Massacre is similar to Scream and can be enjoyed with a wink because the film contains parodic elements, which are often represented by exaggeration. Like a hilarious shower scene in the communal shower lots of bare skin or the friends who spend their girls’ night out wearing only their underwear. Who does not know that?

On the film poster, too, the half-naked women look fearfully up at the murderer bizarre murder weapon, holding an oversized drill between his legs like a phallus. Feminist author and activist Rita Mae Brown wrote the script and skillfully satirizes the slasher genre. Despite the criticism, Brown and Jones manage to retain the popular slasher elements to provide proper entertainmentas Peyton Brock also describes in her film review in Collider:

Slumber Party Massacre manages a difficult balancing act, giving the viewer all the gooey, gory fun that makes slasher films entertaining, but with thematic intent and clever direction […]. The film is never too preachy or too humble – it’s a clever synthesis of entertainment and social commentary. That’s what Slumber Party Massacre is all about

High school student Trish has a storm-free weekend, so a girls’ night out is a good idea. Her best friends come over for a pajama party and alcohol and marijuana aren’t missing. But the casual evening soon turns into a cruel bloodbath, because the psychopathic mass murderer Russ Thorn has escaped from the nearby mental asylum. Years ago he murdered his way through the city and is ready for the next massacrethe unsuspecting girls come to his rescue.

From the 80s cult film A small franchise was also created. There were two sequels in 1987 and 1990 with a completely new cast and a remake under the same title in 2021. All films have been written and directed by womenbut only the original Slumber Party Massacre achieved cult status.
