One of the best sci-fi series of the year has just been renewed for season 2 – far too few people know about it

One of the best sci fi series of the year has

Apple TV+ is not necessarily the most used streaming service in Germany, but it is certainly the greatest guarantee for sci-fi genius. After the clever, exciting and entertaining sci-fi series Severance, Silo, Foundation and For All Mankind, this year saw the latest entry in the hit list: Dark Matter. Now it is officially being continued.

Far too unknown sci-fi thriller Dark Matter renewed for season 2

In a press release on Monday morning, Apple TV+ delighted sci-fi fans and subscribers of the streaming service. After Season 1 of the fascinating multiverse saga only went online on May 8, 2024, the second season was given the green light just 10 weeks later.

With Dark Matter, author Blake Crouch is adapting his own novel as showrunner. There is no template for season 2 and that is exactly why Crouch is itching to continue, the press release quotes him as saying:

As we were writing and shooting the first season, we realized there was so much more to tell. We were only just beginning to explore the surface of these characters fighting for survival.

This is what Dark Matter is about: The characters in question, who are fighting for survival, are primarily the physics professor Jason Dessen, played by Joel Edgerton (It Comes at Night). One day he disappears without a trace on his way home to his family – and a doppelganger wants to take his place. Without giving you any spoilers, I can tease a nerve-racking odyssey through dozens of parallel dimensions.

The main roles are well cast: Joel Edgerton plays numerous versions of himself, sometimes more sympathetic, sometimes very dark, and is just the right person for the job. At his side, Jennifer Connelly gives her would-be artist a mysterious aura. Alice Braga (Queen of the South), Jimmi Simpson (Westworld) and Dayo Okeniyi (Fresh) skilfully round off the multiverse thriller.

Dark Matter can easily keep up with Netflix and Amazon competition

In contrast to the big sci-fi series from the competition, Dark Matter has hardly been on anyone’s radar this year. Between the new series from the Game of Thrones makers 3 Body Problem on Netflix and the acclaimed video game adaptation Fallout on Amazon, Dark Matter definitely (but unjustly) got lost. For me personally, it is the most refreshing and best sci-fi series of the year – until now.

A look at the number of ratings shows how much more attention the major streaming services generate for their series. While Fallout and 3 Body Problem have just under 1000 and 600 ratings on Moviepilot, Dark Matter goes almost unnoticed with 134 ratings. With a rating of 7.0, it is as good as the major sci-fi event 3 Body Problem.

The finale of Dark Matter aired on June 26th – since then you can binge all 9 episodes on Apple TV+ in one go. It’s worth it!
