Ridley Scott created film history with Alien. Over 30 years later, the director has returned to the sci-fi series. The 2012 prequel Prometheus remains one of the most controversial films in the franchise to date. On Wednesday evening at 8:15 p.m. it runs on Kabel Eins.
The strip, which is criticized for logical errors and unanswered questions, among other things, is definitely one of the most visually stunning, most ambitious sci-fi films the last 15 years.
Prometheus brings exciting depth to the Alien franchise
In contrast to his classic of the time, this time Scott does not explore what humanity has not yet discovered in the future, but what we were not yet aware of from our deepest past. In addition to the fascinating opening scene, the android David, played brilliantly by Michael Fassbender, proves to be a key figure in the dilemma between creator and creation.
To the statement that he was created by humans because they could, he replies just as aptly as oppressively: “Can you imagine how disappointing it would be to hear the same from your creator?”
Prometheus also inspires as a nasty horror trip
Outside of these profound considerations, Scott’s work also trumps as a genre film, which always comes with chilling suspense and violent moments of shock roused. In addition, Prometheus occasionally unleashes pure body horror.
Some of the hardest scenes of this kind include aliens breaking bones and disappearing into their victims’ bodies through their mouths, faces being burned by acid or, as a “climax”, the sequence in which Naomi Rapace’s character remove one of the beings from their own womb.
The mix of a return to one’s own genre roots, relentless heaviness, fantastic images and a fascinatingly mythological substructure proves how a well-known franchise can shine anew.
