In the 90’s the USA is overrun by crime. Desperate politicians quickly convert Manhattan into a high-security prison, where pure violence reigns. The former financial center of the world is left to its own devices behind high walls. This is not a fatalistic sociological prediction, but the premise of The Rattlesnake. Unfortunately, the sci-fi masterpiece cannot be found on Amazon or Netflix, but it is part of the WOW range.
Not on Netflix or Amazon: sci-fi cult The Rattlesnake is endlessly entertaining
In the dark vision of the future from 1997, the US President’s (Donald Pleasence) plane crashes over the Manhattan prison island. Crime boss The Duke (Isaac Hayes) summarily captures the most powerful man in the free world and threatens to kill him if he tries to rescue him. Only one man can help the government now.
It is about the war hero Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), who is to be incarcerated for a bank robbery in Manhattan. Police Chief Hauk (Lee Van Cleef) proposes a deal: If he saves the President, he will receive amnesty. At night he will infiltrated into the brutal realm of the outlaws.

Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken
Director John Carpenter’s (Thing From Another World) The Rattlesnake is considered one of the greatest sci-fi cult films of all time, and not without reason. Russell acts as a sarcastic one-man army even more iconic than Rambo, the action is perfectly and efficiently staged. But above all, the nocturnal setting of New York with skyscraper ruins, collapsed landmarks and streets in flames has fascinated fans of the masterpiece for 42 years.
As Metacritic shows, many critics acknowledged the film’s strengths. The Rattlesnake was a box office success and made possible the entertaining, if less imaginative, sequel Escape From LA For The Future, according to The Wrap Another sequel planned.
