In the future of film, instead of electronic game consoles, human bodies serve as an interface to virtual reality. You can enter the parallel world via an umbilical cord that is inserted into the spinal cord. If you don’t have this organic port yet, you can have your spine drilled by Willem Dafoe as a dubious gas station owner. As a master of body horror, David Cronenberg stages all of this in the most disgusting way possible.
With cartilaginous weapons that fire teeth, lively pulsating clumps of tissue and eerily used body orifices, eXistenZ draws one Visually clearly different vision of the future to other sci-fi films, which so often rely on a high-gloss chrome-plated, clean look. The narrative parallels to The Matrix may be obvious. But that doesn’t stop either sci-fi vision from developing its own fascination.
