Some films rekindle interest in an entire genre. Gladiator is such a movie. The 2000 action masterpiece made Russell Crowe a megastar, a box office hit and breathed new life into the sandal movie. Now the grandiose epic is available to stream on Netflix.
At Netflix: Action cult Gladiator should soon get part 2 with a promising cast
Gladiator revolves around the Roman officer Maximus (Crowe) who is killed by nobleman Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) betrayed and brutally robbed of his family. A slave trader has him trained as a gladiator. And gives him the tools of his bloody revenge.
For many fans, Gladiator is the gold standard of historical spectacle: lavish sets, an epic story, and hard-hitting sword fighting action. However, it came as a surprise when Over 20 years after Part 1 Gladiator 2 was announced. Ridley Scott (Alien) returns to direct. Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal and an actress from the predecessor are also there.
In the sequel, Lucius (played by Aftersun’s Paul Mescal in Part 2), Commodus’ nephew, has come of age. Rome is still anything but a safe place. Two emperors rule over the mighty empire, yes Intrigues conjure up new power relations. Gladiator 2 is scheduled to start in German cinemas on November 21, 2024.
