The psychiatrist Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) witnesses one of her patients present herself before her eyes cut his throat with a shard of pottery. The young woman had previously spoken of constantly seeing a creature with a cruel grin. Cotter returns home traumatized. But soon she knows only too well what the deceased was talking about.
With Smile, director Parker Finn shows a flair for atmospheric staging and effective moments of shock. The result is clear. The indie film grossed over $200 million at $17 million, as evidenced by The Numbers. Rotten Tomatoes shows the lively critical response.
With its success, Smile even rivaled established horror like Halloween Ends. Many fans expect and hope for a second part. A sequel has not yet been officially confirmed.
