One of the best gangster thrillers of the last 25 years, later rebooted with a series that failed across the board

One of the best gangster thrillers of the last 25

Denzel Washington is currently ensuring justice for the third time as an equalizer. The action star and character actor earned his tough image not least with Training Day. The thriller was released in cinemas in 2001. The cult status is underpinned by regular attempts to recycle the story.

The highly exciting psychological game will soon achieve classic status. At Moviepilot, fans gave one away strong 7.5 rating for Training Day – very few gangster thrillers can do that. Today it’s on TV.

Denzel Washington as Devil Cop: What is Training Day about?

For Jake Hoyt (Ethan Hawke) it is his first day on the job as a drug investigator: his new partner, the experienced Alonzo Harris (Denzel Washington), is supposed to introduce him to life on the street. However, Hoyt soon realizes that Harris’ methods are definitely problematic. He takes the law into his own hands in his often brutal actions. The longer Hoyt travels with Harris, the less sure Hoyt is about which side of the law Harris really is on.

Series canceled after just one season: Is there still a story to come?

The Training Day series

16 years after Training Day was released in cinemas, a rather surprising TV series appeared: It was also called Training Day. Justin Cornwell played the role of the rookie, Bill Paxton took on the role of Denzel Washington. Otherwise, the constellations and story elements are almost identical. Some of the reviews were underground.

The series was canceled after one season. It is questionable whether the falling ratings were to blame. Unfortunately, lead actor Bill Paxton died after the first 13 episodes were filmed. Without him it was impossible to continue the series.

Also interesting:

Another two years later, it was announced that a prequel to Training Day was being developed. A young Alonzo Harris should be at the center. To date, however, nothing has come of the plans.
