One of the best films of the 2010s

2015 was a bombastic blockbuster year. From the finale of the Hunger Games to the fight against Ultron and the return to Jurassic Park. The Terminator, James Bond and Mad Max were also there with exciting adventures as a new chapter was opened in the galaxy far, far away.

Between all the mega-blockbusters there were also some small films to discover, which only very few film fans had on their screens before their theatrical release. The best? The wrenching melodrama Carol starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. Tonight you can watch the film on TV late at night.

A film that showers you with emotions: Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara fall in love with Carol

Carol takes you to New York in the 1950s. Shortly before Christmas, wealthy Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett) meets young saleswoman Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) in a department store. A polite, inconspicuous encounter that changes the lives of both women should change forever. But the time in which they live restricts them.

A cautious introduction is followed by a passionate falling in love. However, it doesn’t take long before social conventions and Carol’s husband, Harge (Kyle Chandler), become a problem. About the love story Dark clouds are gathering. But they can’t stifle the tender storytelling.

Director Todd Haynes, who has already created a melodrama based on Douglas Sirk’s The Sky is So Far, stages Carol with an extraordinary feeling for the hidden emotional world of the characters. Even if their words don’t say it: the film conveys their feelings with all its possibilities.

Edward Lachman’s camera frames Carol and Therese in the most beautiful images and colors. Carter Burwell’s warming score has an answer to all the unspoken questions. The film is based on the novel Salt and its price by Patricia Highsmith. For us, the adaptation is one of the best films of the 2010s.
