That’s why the neo-noir crime thriller with Russell Crowe and Kim Basinger is worth it
James Ellroy’s 1990 novel City of Devils was initially considered unfilmable for one simple reason: it was far too complex for a feature film. The novel spans over eight years, processes real crimes with Hollywood history and that in order to draw a social panorama of the USA after the Second World War.
Today LA Confidential would probably be adapted as a series straight away (a series reboot was once planned). Fortunately, things looked different back then: Brian Helgeland and Curtis Hanson, who also directed, worked for two years on the script that would fit LA Confidential into a film running time. And they succeeded.
Together they brought Ellroys dark true crime vision on the screen, which brings together a multi-layered cast of characters from the tops of the Hollywood Hills to the abysses of this nightmarish city.
The crime thriller is a masterpiece of efficiency
LA Confidential is one of those films where every second peripheral character could have their own story. This is a testament to the efficient masterpiece of this film, which with its driving narrative explored the dark edges and recesses of the cityroams through the bars, studios and parties and, rather casually, composes the picture of an entire era.
Kim Basinger as Veronica Lake’s double in LA Confidential
It is refined great neo-noir crime thriller, which appears in numerous best lists, thanks to the ensemble, which has a top-class cast right down to the supporting roles. Among others (who later won an Oscar) Kim Basinger, Danny DeVito and James Cromwell join the cast. Not to mention the edgy score by composer legend Jerry Goldsmith and the elegant cinematography by Dante Spinotti. Perfection is rarely achieved in cinema, but with LA Confidential everyone involved came very close.
