Sequels often have a reputation for being worse than the original. The ideas are no longer fresh, the magic has vanished. Everything will only bigger, faster and louder raised. The bottom line is you’re watching the same film over and over again. With the third Indiana Jones adventure, however, Steven Spielberg proves that there is another way.

After Spielberg delivered a perfect blockbuster with Raiders of the Lost Ark and ventured into unexpectedly dark territory with the prequel The Temple of Doom, The Last Crusade feels like a number revue of the best elements of the first part. But the sequel is much more than a copy.

    With Spielberg, however, repeating the familiar never feels like someone is shooting a commission on autopilot. On the contrary: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade transported the same A spirit of adventure like the original and adds a key ingredient to the story: Sean Connery.

    As Prof. Dr. Henry Jones Sr. stars as Connery in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, adding an extra layer to the story that is already nicely built up by the flashback prologue. The father-son relationship gave the film a touching vulnerabilityespecially with regard to the object of desire.

    The Holy Grail, which promises eternal life, is being hunted by all parties in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. In the end, however, the film tells less about infinity than about the transience of the here and now, in which the characters serious decisions about who they really are. At this point at the latest, there can no longer be any talk of an uninspired sequel.
