The annual autumn Harry Potter marathon has been running on Sat.1 for two weeks. Today, Saturday, we arrived at Harry Potter 3. The Prisoner of Azkaban is generally considered the best and most important part of the magical fantasy series. We explain why below.

Magic student Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) is entering his third year at Hogwarts, which begins under dark auspices: The murderer Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) has escaped from Azkaban prison and is apparently targeting Harry. The school is therefore “protected” by the prison guards, the Dementors.

Harry Potter grew up along with his fans. There were already monsters and horrors in the series before part 3. However, Harry Potter 3 marked a turning point in the franchise in many ways. With Alfonso Cuarón, a new director took over after Chris Columbus – with a huge impact on the design of the series.
The production and atmosphere changed and this can best be seen in the example of the Dementors. In part 2, the young viewers had to deal with spiders and giant snakes, which a child’s mind can process quite easily.
And then came the train scene: In part 3, faceless, floating shadowy creatures board the Hogwarts Express, who want to take out the souls of Harry, Ron and Hermione so that they vegetate as an empty shell for all eternity. A huge scary jump. Harry Potter 3 suddenly offered tangible horror. A new, dark tone was set, which the series maintained until its end.

Sat.1 shows Harry Potter on Saturday at 8:15 p.m. The repeat follows on Sunday at 2:25 p.m. The series is currently not available as a streaming flat rate.
